KEEP PUGET SOUND CLEAN

1 04 2010

It’s Earth Month again and we are thrilled to be raising money for Puget Soundkeeper Alliance who works to keep Puget Sound clean by actually cleaning the waters (7 tons a year!) and by suing companies that don’t comply with the Clean Water Act.

We are looking to raise $50,000 for PSA to fund their operations and programs.

There are three ways to participate:

1.  Click here to donate!

2. Join us for our WALK for WATER with PSA and Aveda around Capitol Hill on April 18th.  Registration begins at 10.00 a.m. at Gary Manuel Aveda Institute.

3.  You can have your haircut for our team for a suggested donation of $25.  Come to GMAI on Sunday, April 18th at 11.00 a.m. for cuts, fun and community.

March Belltown Art Walk

3 03 2010

Artist Statements

The environments and people that have surrounded my life inform the art I create. My work is about constructing autobiographical images that explore the ghosts and spirits of my past.  I am interested in how both personal and cultural histories have profoundly affected my visual language.

I compose memorials to the intangible memories of my past.  By visually recording impressions of specific times, places, and events in my life I am preserving memories that seem to fade with each passing year.

My work calls upon the repetitive nature of printmaking and photography to create a network of reoccurring images that I can meditate on to help search for a truth.  I use a lexicon of images that relate to specific events in my history.  Repeated images of bridges, birds, trains, war, masks, urban landscapes, and old family portraits find their way into my work lending themselves to an unfolding narrative.  All these images carry a personal biography, but also carry the weight of their own metaphors helping to furnish an ever-growing personal narrative.

Michael Edward McGovern 2010

Two years ago I read a book titled Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian.  It is a coming of age memoir about growing up as a fourth generation Armenian in America.   Balakian did not really know anything about his family history until he became an adult and began to do his own research. Through his research he discovered his families involvement in the Armenian genocide and how and why they immigrated to America.  His family never spoke of their past, and Balakian had to piece his own history together.

For years I have been making work about issues surrounding my family, but it was this book that inspired me to go in the direction I am now.  I cannot imagine growing up in a family that never shared their history with the younger generations.  I grew up in an Armenian family who talked incessantly about our past and our legacy.  I have dug deeper into that history and focused on my Babi Jan (grandfather).  My recent work is about him and how his survival of war and genocide has helped shape our family, and more specifically, who I have become.

Keeping your house clean

22 04 2009

Alpine Cleaning Company recently sent us this list of household cleaning products to avoid and safer alternatives.

Is your house toxic because of the cleaning products you’re using? Here’s a list of six household cleaners to avoid and alternatives to help detoxify your home.

1. Antibacterial cleaners
These cleaners contain triclosan, a form of dioxin, linked with weakened immune systems, decreased fertility, hormone disruption and birth defects.  Alternative: Regular soap, which kills 99.4 percent of germs. Antibacterial soap kills 99.6 percent.

2. Air Fresheners
One main ingredient, formaldehyde, is a carcinogen, causing allergic reactions, dermatitis, headaches, mucous membrane irritations, joint and chest pain, depression, fatigue, dizziness and immune dysfunction.
Alternative: Open the window or use an exhaust fan.

3. Dishwasher detergent
They contain a dry form of highly concentrated chlorine that is poisonous and have been known to produce skin irritations or burns, and cause eye injuries and damage to other mucous membranes.  Alternatives: Detergents that are phosphate and chlorine free.

4. Oven cleaners
Among the most dangerous chemicals in households, these cleaners contain sodium hydroxide (a derivative of lye) so corrosive it can eat through the top layer of skin and cause severe tissue damage.  Alternative: Make a scrub of baking soda, salt and water paste.

5.  Home use carpet and upholstery shampoo
The main ingredient, perchlorethylene (the same one used in dry cleaning), is a known carcinogen, damaging to the liver, kidney and the nervous system.  Alternative: Use a mix of baking soda and water. Salt will take out wine or fruit stains. Club soda will remove lighter stains. Baking soda and cornstarch will deodorize.  When having your carpet professionally cleaned, make sure to check the cleaning solutions are Green Seal Certified.

6. Toilet, tub and tile bowl cleaners
Are a source of many poisonings, particularly since they are used in small, often windowless spaces. Highly toxic, bathroom cleaners
Alternative: Remove toilet bowl stains with pure vinegar. Dilute with water to remove soap residue. Washing soda or borax is also effective on tiles.

Last Year’s Earth Month Winner

9 04 2009

Last year, Alex won the prize for raising the most money for Puget Soundkeeper Alliance – over $6,000. To thank her Aveda & Gary Manuel sent her on a tour of Uganda with other Aveda folks.

She visited an organic cotton factory where she and her fellow travellers gave the workers hand and neck massages to thank them for their hard work. They also met with Global Greengrants who told them about the water projects in Uganda.

Alex also went to a day care / pre-school in a Kampala slum.   They make necklaces from recycled paper and then sell them to pay for field trips and supplies.  Alex continues to help them by selling the necklaces here in the States so they can make more money.
